As part of a California Mental Health Services Act Innovations grant, Idea Engineering was asked to create materials that explain how psychiatric advance directives work and the benefits to everyone who might create one or access one to help someone in a crisis.

A Psychiatric Advance Directive (PAD) ensures that the voice of a person in a behavioral health crisis can always speak for them and guide responses when the person may not be able to make their own decisions. This may cover things like de-escalation strategies or simple but important things such as which drugs work best and which do not. A PAD gives first responders, crisis teams and healthcare providers the critical information they need to understand and comfort a person in crisis, and to do their jobs in the most effective, efficient and timely way. It additionally provides contact information for trusted people the individual would like to be alerted.

Introduction to Psychiatric Advance Directives

This is an ongoing multi-county project under the auspices of a California Mental Health Services Act Innovations grant. It is unique in the depth of inclusion of peers (people with lived experience with behavioral health conditions) and other key stakeholders throughout the development process, as well as the robust digital platform which will make psychiatric advance directives private and yet easy to create and to share. 

 

Idea Engineering was asked to work in collaboration with county staff, peers and other stakeholders to create materials that explain how psychiatric advance directives work and the benefits to everyone who might create one or access one to help someone in a crisis.

Spanish Introduction to Psychiatric Advance Directives

 

As components of this project, IE created a distinctive brand with logo and tagline, explainer videos, project website and a promotional toolkit. The logo was developed with input from all key stakeholders with an icon designed to assist with recognition across languages and literacy levels, including when in a distracted mental state. Materials are being developed in all of the counties' threshold languages. Additionally, IE will be creating training videos and additional promotional communications as future elements of the project.
